Helen has always enjoyed historic English Literature and has taken a deep interest in her English ancestors. Sexual mores have changed drastically in my 84 years of life, as well as attitudes about family life, race and religion. I hope to explore changes in attitudes over my life span. This is not a research paper. I taught freshman English in two universities, where the students were required to document carefully. I don’t want to do that anymore. I may get a date or a name wrong. Some names I changed on purpose, to avoid embarrassing the children or grandchildren of people who behaved badly. Instead of factual research, I want to explore emotions and attitudes as they changed over the years. Why are emotions so important? We have just held a very divisive election. We are divided by politics and social mores. Yes, it is better if our emotions are grounded in actual facts; our recent election proved how dangerous feelings are when fed by lies, so I have tried to be as factual as my memory allows, but in the end, our behavior is shaped by how we feel.
About the Author
Jo Ellen Oliver won a college scholarship for her essay, “Texas City, April 16, 1947,”sparking her interest in writing. She graduated in English education from the University of Texas and earned two masters’ degrees from Auburn University and the University of Georgia in reading education and counseling. She also earned a PhD from the University of Georgia She has had articles in professional journals and has published two books under the pen name of Jillian Wright: The Man Under the Bridge, about homeless people, and Fox Hollow, a mystery-romance. This collection of autobiographical stories is intended to portray changes of attitude over the last century about family, race, and sex.
Oliver is married to Dr. John E. Oliver, a retired professor and veterinary neurologist. They have three children and ten grandchildren.

This book describes a visual approach to art. It stands in contrast to the current linguistic approach. It is about looking at art rather than reading about art. Looking at hundreds of works of art from the whole history of art demonstrates that every work of art needs to be seen in a particular way, the way it was seen when it was made. We do not see the world directly. We see pictures of the world in our head. These are ten basic ways for looking at art based on the ways we look at the pictures in our head. These ten ways when applied to works of art from the stone age to the present reveal patterns in the ways of looking at art throughout history. They also reveal neglected masterpieces, famous works misidentified and how the misunderstood work of certain famous artists should be seen.
About the Author
I have been an art historian for forty five years. I have a Masters degree from New York University and a Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. I taught briefly at Villanova University and the University of Hampshire, but most of my life has been devoted to understanding the visual order that underlies a work of art. In addition to working in libraries I traveled extensively here and in Europe to see works first hand. Now that my traveling days are over due to age and health I am concentrating on writing about what I have learned and discovered. I want to pass this information on to future generations and hopefully to inspire others to see art as it was made to be seen. About the Author
I am 41 years old, a mother of two, and a grandmother of one. I grew up in a small town in Michigan. Although my childhood was a good one I made a lot of wrong choices. I was not good with peer-pressure and had little self-esteem. I have been married three times and have been happily married for the past 18 years. I am twice a breast cancer survivor.
When my children reached school age I had the opportunity to spend most of my time there with them. I started out helping the teacher and students needing help staying caught up. That led me to getting very involved in a mentoring program. I took students under my wing not only academically but also socially. It was hard not to spread myself too thin. There were so many students I wanted to reach out and help. I was surprised at what children were facing in their lives. The heartbreak was enormous and at times hard to endure.
After the second occurrence of breast cancer I took some time to do some soul searching. That is when I realized I was where I wanted to be; I loved being on the inside of the education system. I love to watch children smile when they are proud of their achievements. I also have loved helping build self-esteem and self-confidence.
I hope what I have written will inspire anyone who needs it to make better choices, reach higher, understand each other better and know we all have a purpose. -
